New paper in Progress in Oceanography

Satellites have clearly demonstrated the worth in mapping the ocean’s temperature, wave height, and plankton productivity, but we have not learned how to map the ocean’s rates of nitrogen-based productivity, respiratory CO2 production, oxygen consumption, and many other important ocean rate processes. Our recently published paper on modeling New Production from nitrate reductase activity is a “first-step” in learning how to map nitrate-based primary productivity over time and in ocean-space.

Extraordinary Doctorate award for Igor Fernández-Urruzola

On Saturday 26 January our colleague Igor Fernández Urruzola was awarded the Extraordinary Doctorate Award 2018, thanks to the thesis entitled: Understanding the zooplankton ammonium excretion: From biogeochemical implications to intracellular regulatory mechanisms, directed by May Gómez and Ted Packard. Award was collected on their behalf by his directors.

We congratulate our colleague!

FIMAR 2018

As usual, EOMAR attended this year to the FIMAR, with a stand shared with the different groups at the ECOAQUA institute. We presented different activities related to the research performed in the group, showing zooplankton and phytoplankton organisms, as well as Aurelia aurita polyps and microplastic samples. On the other hand, our colleagues Daniel Bondyale, Vanesa Romero and Jorge Rapp gave a talk speaking about our works in jellyfish and microplastic pollution.

Conference on natural biodegradable products and discussion about climate change of MAPAMA (Ministerio de Agricultura y Pesca, Alimentación y Medio Ambiente)

We received an invitation to participate in a conference organized by the Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries, Food and Environment, (MAPAMA), where they were very interested in our results, already published, on pollution by microplastics in waters of the Canary Islands. As final conclusions, the need to take care of the ecosystems and bet on biological and biodegradable materials was highlighted, in order to mitigate the pollution of the oceans.
