Biological Impacts Of Ocean Acidification (BIOACIDS)

In the winter and later in the fall of 2014, EOMAR took part in the GEOMAR KOSMOS GC 1.0 and 2.0 experiments. During these periods, samples from nine mesocosms with different ppCO2 levels were taken to allow us to follow the behavior of the planktonic community in the different scenarios of acidification under oligotrophic conditions. To improve the understanding of this community, during the experiment an ultraoligotrophic phase, an upwelling phase (where deep water was added to each mesocosm), and a post upwelling phase were simulated. EOMAR was able to use new metabolic analyses to monitor mesozooplankton and microplankton samples in these simulations in order to understand the evolution of the community’s fitness under different acidification levels.
